HIJ WORKING VISIT TO DENMARK FOR COOPERATION IN JUSTICE

The High Inspector of Justice, Artur Metani conducted a working visit to Denmark on 21 and 22 May 2026, in the framework of strengthening institutional cooperation and exchanging experiences in the field of justice and mechanisms for the accountability of magistrates. 

In Copenhagen, the HIJ delegation held meetings with representatives of Danish institutions and the Embassy of Albania. 

During the meeting with the Director for European Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Jakob K. Alvi discussions focused on the progress of justice reform, rule of law standards and Albania’s European integration processes. 

During the discussion the High Inspector of Justice Artur Metani, expressed appreciation for Danish support and emphasized that justice reform in Albania has consolidated the principles of the rule of law and the independence of the judicial system over the last decade. He underlined that the HIJ exercises its functions in accordance with the principle of disciplinary accountability, while at the same time preserving the necessary balance between the functional independence of magistrates and citizens’ right to transparency and accountability in the administration of justice. 

The meeting also addressed the HIJ’s regional cooperation. Metani highlighted the institution’s membership in the European RESIJ network and the organization in Tirana of the Regional Conference of Inspection Services with the countries of the Western Balkans, as an initiative that will continue further. 

For his part, Jakob K. Alvi commended the work and institutional development of the HIJ, while noting that Denmark will reopen its embassy in Albania in the coming months. 

The High Inspector of Justice also held a meeting at the Special Court of Indictment and Revision, where he was received by the President of this court and at the same time, Justice of the Supreme Court, Ms. Hanne Schmidt, the Vice-President, Justice of the Supreme Court Mr. Jens Kruse Mikkelsen, as well as Mr. Christian Dam Nielsen, a judge delegated to the Supreme Court and Legal Director at the Secretariat of the Special Court of Indictment and Revision. 

During the meeting, discussions focused on Danish inspection and accountability mechanisms in the justice system, as well as practices for handling disciplinary matters and ensuring professional standards. 

The HIJ delegation also held a meeting at the Embassy of Albania in Copenhagen with Ambassador Sokol Dedja, where discussions focused on the role of the embassy in strengthening relations with the host country and supporting cooperation with the Albanian diaspora, as well as its importance as a bridge between Albanian institutions and the Albanian community abroad. 

The visit served to deepen institutional dialogue and to become acquainted with the Danish experience in the functioning of justice institutions and rule of law standards.
